A note  on Karadayan nonbu   on  14-3-2021   sunday

     The  Karadayan Nolumbu(nombu)  commemorating    the epic story  of Savithri   regaining her husband from Lord Yama   is celebrated   at the last few minutes before the end of Masi(Kumbam) month  and before  the beginning  of  the month of Panguni(Meenam) .Normally   all  unmarried ladies  and married  ladies  with husbands  alive(sumangali)   offer   sweet as as well as  salt  Adai (made of rice harvested in the Kar season-May june ) , butter, banana  fruit   along with Vettilai  Pakku   to the Goddess and a yellow thread   which is offered    in the pooja   is tied by themselves or their mother in case of Unmarried ladies    and tied by the husband in case of Sumangailis   At that time they chant

 

Dhram gruhnami subhage sahardhraam
Dharami aham bharthu
Ayushya Sidhartham supreethabhava sarvadha

 

தோரம் க்ருஹ்ணாமி சுபகே ஸஹாரித்ரம் தராம்யஹம்

பர்துஹு ஆயுஷ்ய ஸித்யர்த்தம் சுப்ரீதா பவ ஸர்வதா

 

 

I am taking the thread ,Oh pleasant goddess, with affection ,

And I am wearing  it   for long life   span of my husband.

Become always   pleased with me.

The following   Tamil chant  is also chanted

Urukaadha Venneyum oradaiyam naan nootren
Orukkalum en kanavar ennai vittu pririyadhirukka vendum

"உருகாத வெண்ணெயும் ,ஓர் அடையும் நோற்று உனக்குநான்  வைத்தேன் ,எந்நாளும் என் கணவர் எனை விட்டு நீங்காத அருள்தருவாய்" என்று  அம்மனை நோக்கி வேண்டி நமஸ்கரிக்கவும்.

 

(I have offered  you unmelted butter    and One Adai  ,PLeae bless me so that my husband  will live with me forever)

 

Most of those    who observe the Nombu   do not take    food   from morning till   they   do the pooja 

 

   This year the month  starts   at 6.01 pm  IST( 14thmarch) and learned Vadhyars   suggest  that this pooja should be done  between   4 PM to 4.30 Pm because  4.30 PM to 6.00 is rahu  kalam on that day  The corresponding time   for  this interval   in different   countries  is given below:-

Dubai  2.30 PM to 3 PM

Singapore  6.30  Pm 7 PM

Kulalampur  6.30 Pm to 7 .PM

Frankfurt and Paris  11.30 Am to 12 Noon

London 10.30  am  to 11.00

USA  eastern time   5.30  Am 6.ooAM

USA central time    4.30  Am 5.00AM

Western time   2.30 am to  3.00 Am(better do it previous night before sleeping)

Sydney   9.30 PM to 10.PM+

Tokyo   7.30 AM to 8 PM

 

*I understand  when it is very late  at night like this    , the  pooja is done before going to bed.

 

          It is a practice in certain homes   to  worship goddess Kamakshi  by calling a priest . Instead  you can also  chant the following Sankalpam and perform the Pooja yourselves

 

Mama   deerga    saumanglya   avapthyartham  , mama bhartheu   anyonya  preethi ,

Abhivrudhyartham  , Aviyogartham    Sri Kamakshi poojaam karishye

 

மம  தீர்க  ஸுமங்கல்ய அவாப்த்யர்த்தம்

மம பர்த்துச்ச அன்யோன்யப்ரீதி

அபிவ்ருத்தியர்த்தம் அவியோகார்த்தம் 

ஸ்ரீ காமாக்ஷி பூஜாம் கரிஷ்யே

 

 

Translation

For  getting the status of Sumangali   for a very long time ,

For increase  of mutual love between me and my husband

For never being ever getting parted with him ,

I am doing the worship of  Goddess  Kamakshi.

 

And chant the  Dhyanam

 

Ekambara  nadha   dayithaam   kamakshim  ,

BHuvaneswarim  dhyayami  hrudaye,

DEvim vanchithartha  pradhayinum

 

ஏகாம்பர நாத தயிதாம் காமாக்ஷீம் 

புவனேஸ்வரீம் த்யாயாமி ஹ்ருதயே 

தேவீம் வாஞ்சிதார்த்த ப்ரதாயிநீம்

காமாக்ஷீம் ஆவாஹயாமி.

 

 

Translation

I  meditate  on the wife of Elambara Nadha,

Who is the goddess  of the universe in my mind ,

So that  the goddess   fulfill my mind’s desires.

and worship the goddess  by offering her flowers

 

. It would be great if you can chant the Yamashtakam   chanted by Savithri  to  get back her husband.

Savithri Uvacha:-
Savithri said:-

1.Thapasaa Dharma Rajaya , pushkare Bhaskare puraa,
Dharmasam yam sutham prapa Dharmarajam namamyaham.

In the olden times Sun God got Yamuna and Dharma Raja as children,
And the Son who is the follower of Dharma , was named as king of dharma.

2.Samathaa sarva bhootheshu yasya sarvasya sakshina,
Atho yan nama samanam ithi tham pranamamyaham.

He treated every living being as equal and is the witness of everything,
And thus he was equal to his name and I salute him.

3.Yenaa anthascha krutho , viswe sarveshaam jeevinaam param,
Karmo anuroopa kalena , tham kruthantham namamyaham.

He made all beings of the world die ,
At the proper time and I salute him who puts an end.

4.Bbarthi dandam dandachyaa , paapinaam shudhi hethave,
Namami tham Danda dharam , ya saastha sarva karmanam.

He gave punishment using his scepter to the sinners to make them pure,
I salute he who holds the scepter, who is the teacher of all duties.

5.Viswe ya kavalayathyeva sarvayuschapi santhatham,
Atheeva durnirvarya cha tham kaalam pranamamyaham.

Since he was swallowing the world and he always takes away all souls,
At highly exceptional circumstances and I salute that Kala.

6.Thapaswi Vaishnavo dharmo , samyami vijithendriya,
Jeevinaam karma phaladham tham Yamam pranamamyaham.

An ascetic following the Vaishnava Dharma, one who has won over his senses,
And one who awards the results of Karma to beings is Yama and I salute him.

7.Swa athmaramascha sarvagno mithram punyakruthaam bhaveth,
Paapinam klesadham yasya , puthro mithro namamyaham.

Rejoicing in his own self , one who knows all , one who is a friend of those who do good deeds,
And one who troubles sinners is the son of Sun God and I salute him.

8.Yajjanma Brahmaano vamse jwalantham Brahma thejasaa,
Yo dhyayathi Param brahma Brahma vamsam namamyaham.

He took birth in the clan of Brahma and shined with effulgence of Brahmana,
And he meditates on the divine Brahmam, and I salute the clan of Brahma.

Phala Sruthi

9.Ithyukthwaa saa cha Savithri prananama Yamam Mune,
Yamasthaam Vishnu Bhajanam karmapakam uvacha ha.

Oh sage after saying this Savithri saluted that Yama,
And Yama heard her praise of Lord Vishnu due to her ripening of her JKarma.

10.Idham Yamastakam nithyam prathar uthaya padeth,
Yamath thasya bhayam Nasthi sarva paapath pramuchyathe.

If this octet on Yama is read daily as soon as one gets up in the morning,
He will have no fear of Yama and would get rid of all his sins.

11.Maha Paapi yathi paden nithyam BHakthyaa cha Narada,
Yama karothi tham shudham kaya vyuhena nischitham.

Oh Narada, if a great sinner reads it daily with devotion,
Yama will make him pure from at the time of his soul seperatring from body.

Ithi Sri Brahma Vaivartha Maha purane prakruthi khande Savithri krutha Sri yamashtakam sampoornam.

(अथ यमाष्टकम् ।)

सावित्र्युवाच –

तपसा धर्ममाराध्य पुष्करे भास्करः पुरा ।
धर्मं सूर्यः सुतं प्राप धर्मराजं नमाम्यहम् ॥ 1॥

समता सर्वभूतेषु यस्य सर्वस्य साक्षिणः ।
अतो यन्नाम शमनमिति तं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥ 2॥

येनान्तश्च कृतो विश्वे सर्वेषां जीविनां परम् ।
कामानुरूपं कालेन तं कृतान्तं नमाम्यहम् ॥ 3॥

बिभर्ति दण्डं दण्डाय पापिनां शुद्धिहेतवे ।
नमामि तं दण्डधरं यः शास्ता सर्वजीविनाम् ॥ 4॥

विश्वं च कलयत्येव यः सर्वेषु च सन्ततम् ।
अतीव दुर्निवार्यं च तं कालं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥ 5॥

तपस्वी ब्रह्मनिष्ठो यः संयमी सञ्जितेन्द्रियः ।
जीवानां कर्मफलदस्तं यमं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥ 6॥

स्वात्मारामश्च सर्वज्ञो मित्रं पुण्यकृतां भवेत् ।
पापिनां क्लेशदो यस्तं पुण्यमित्रं नमाम्यहम् ॥ 7॥

यज्जन्म ब्रह्मणोंऽशेन ज्वलन्तं ब्रह्मतेजसा ।
यो ध्यायति परं ब्रह्म तमीशं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥ 8॥

(फलश्रुतिः ।)

इत्युक्त्वा सा च सावित्री प्रणनाम यमं मुने ।
यमस्तां शक्तिभजनं कर्मपाकमुवाच ह ॥ 9॥

इदं यमाष्टकं नित्यं प्रातरुत्थाय यः पठेत् ।
यमात्तस्य भयं नास्ति सर्वपापात्प्रमुच्यते ॥ 10॥

महापापी यदि पठेन्नित्यं भक्तिसमन्वितः ।
यमः करोति संशुद्धं कायव्यूहेन निश्चितम् ॥ 11॥

इति श्रीमद्देवीभागवते महापुराणेऽष्टादशसाहस्र्यां संहितायां
नवमस्कन्धे यमाष्टकवर्णनं नामेकत्रिशोऽध्यायः ॥

(அத யமாஷ்டகம் ।)
ஸாவித்ர்யுவாச –
தபஸா தர்மமாராத்ய புஷ்கரே பாஸ்கர: புரா ।
தர்மம் ஸூர்ய: ஸுதம் ப்ராப தர்மராஜம் நமாம்யஹம் ॥ 1॥

ஸமதா ஸர்வபூதேஷு யஸ்ய ஸர்வஸ்ய ஸாக்ஷிண: ।
அதோ யந்நாம ஶமநமிதி தம் ப்ரணமாம்யஹம் ॥ 2॥

யேநாந்தஶ்ச க்ருதோ விஶ்வே ஸர்வேஷாம் ஜீவிநாம் பரம் ।
காமாநுரூபம் காலேந தம் க்ருதாந்தம் நமாம்யஹம் ॥ 3॥

பிபர்தி தண்டம் தண்டாய பாபிநாம் ஶுத்திஹேதவே ।
நமாமி தம் தண்டதரம் ய: ஶாஸ்தா ஸர்வஜீவிநாம் ॥ 4॥

விஶ்வம் ச கலயத்யேவ ய: ஸர்வேஷு ச ஸந்ததம் ।
அதீவ துர்நிவார்யம் ச தம் காலம் ப்ரணமாம்யஹம் ॥ 5॥

தபஸ்வீ ப்ரஹ்மநிஷ்டோ ய: ஸம்யமீ ஸஞ்ஜிதேந்த்ரிய: ।
ஜீவாநாம் கர்மபலதஸ்தம் யமம் ப்ரணமாம்யஹம் ॥ 6॥

ஸ்வாத்மாராமஶ்ச ஸர்வஜ்ஞோ மித்ரம் புண்யக்ருதாம் பவேத் ।
பாபிநாம் க்லேஶதோ யஸ்தம் புண்யமித்ரம் நமாம்யஹம் ॥ 7॥

யஜ்ஜந்ம ப்ரஹ்மணோம்ঽஶேந ஜ்வலந்தம் ப்ரஹ்மதேஜஸா ।
யோ த்யாயதி பரம் ப்ரஹ்ம தமீஶம் ப்ரணமாம்யஹம் ॥ 8॥

(பலஶ்ருதி: ।)

இத்யுக்த்வா ஸா ச ஸாவித்ரீ ப்ரணநாம யமம் முநே ।
யமஸ்தாம் ஶக்திபஜநம் கர்மபாகமுவாச ஹ ॥ 9॥

இதம் யமாஷ்டகம் நித்யம் ப்ராதருத்தாய ய: படேத் ।
யமாத்தஸ்ய பயம் நாஸ்தி ஸர்வபாபாத்ப்ரமுச்யதே ॥ 10॥

மஹாபாபீ யதி படேந்நித்யம் பக்திஸமந்வித: ।
யம: கரோதி ஸம்ஶுத்தம் காயவ்யூஹேந நிஶ்சிதம் ॥ 11॥

இதி ஶ்ரீமத்தேவீபாகவதே மஹாபுராணேঽஷ்டாதஶஸாஹஸ்ர்யாம் ஸம்ஹிதாயாம்
