A note  on Karadayan nonbu   on  15-3-2019 Friday

     The  Karadayan Nolumbu(nombu)  commemorating    the epic story  of Savithri   regaining her husband from Lord Yama   is celebrated   at the last few minutes before the end of Masi(Kumbam) month  and before  the beginning  of  the month of Panguni(Meenam) .Normally   all  unmarried ladies  and married  ladies  with husbands  alive(sumangali)   offer   sweet as as well as  salt  Adai (made of rice harvested in the Kar season-May june ) , butter, banana  fruit   along with Vettilai  Pakku   to the Goddess and a yellow thread   which is offered    in the pooja   is tied by themselves or their mother in case of Unmarried ladies    and tied by the husband in case of Sumangailis   At that time they chant

Dhram gruhnami subhage sahardhraam
Dharami aham bharthu
Ayushya Sidhartham supreethabhava sarvadha

I am taking the thread ,Oh pleasant goddess, with affection ,
And I am wearing  it   for long life   span of my husband.
Become always   pleased with me.

The following   Tamil chant  is also chanted

Urukaadha Venneyum oradaiyam naan nootren
Orukkalum en kanavar ennai vittu pririyadhirukka vendum

"உருகாத வெண்ணெயும் ,ஓர் அடையும் நோற்று உனக்குநான்  வைத்தேன் ,எந்நாளும் என் கணவர் எனை விட்டு நீங்காத அருள்தருவாய்என்று  அம்மனை நோக்கி வேண்டி நமஸ்கரிக்கவும்.

(I have offered  you unmelted butter    and One Adai  ,PLeae bless me so that my husband  will live with me forever)

Most of those    who observe the Nombu   do not take    food   from morning till   they   do the pooja 

   This year the month  starts   at 4.45  AM  IST(early morning  of 15thmarch) and learned Vadhyars   suggest  that this pooja should be done  between  5.15  am -5.45 AM  and before the month beginning, . THerefor  all cooking and preperations  should be  done  in the early morning 

The corresponding time   for 5.45  in different   countries  is given below:-

          It is a practice in certain homes   to  worship goddess Kamakshi  by calling a priest . Instead  you can also  chant the following Sankalpam and perform the Pooja yourselves

Mama   deerga    saumanglya   avapthyartham  , mama bhartheu   anyonya  preethi ,
Abhivrudhyartham  , Aviyogartham    Sri Kamakshi poojaam karishye

Translation
For  getting the status of Sumangali   for a very long time ,
For increase  of mutual love between me and my husband
For never being ever getting parted with him ,
I am doing the worship of  Goddess  Kamakshi.

And chant the  Dhyanam

Ekambara  nadha   dayithaam   kamakshim  ,
BHuvaneswarim  dhyayami  hrudaye,
DEvim vanchithartha  pradhayinum

Translation
I  meditate  on the wife of Elambara Nadha,
Who is the goddess  of the universe in my mind ,
So that  the goddess   fulfill my mind’s desires.


and worship the goddess  by offering her flowers

  Ratha Sapthami also called as Surya Sapthami or  Surya Jayanthi    is a festival  celebrated on  the Shukla Panchami  in the month of Makara /Kumbha  Masa(Magha masa  for those    who follow Chandra Mana)  .This year the  festival  is  being observed  tomorrow  (12-2-2019)  . It is observed with  several rituals  in the  states of Andhra Pradesh /Karnataka /Maharashtra(For details see  http://www.hindu-blog.com/2009/01/how-to-do-ratha-saptami-puja.html ) .

   In  tamil Nadu the day starts   with ritual bath  by Keeping seven  leaves of  Vellai Erukku (Giant milk weed –Kannada Ekku, Telugu  Jilledu  , Sanskrit –Arka )  on the head .(some people keep one on head, two on shoulders, two on knees   and two on feet) A head bath is taken ,.Some people keep uncooked  rice also on the  Erukku leaves. Women in addition sprinkle turmeric powder  on the rice . You are not supposed  to apply  oil on  the head for that day. During the   ritual bath the  following Manthra  or sloka is chanted:-

I.Manthra (translation by P.R.Ramachander)
“Saptha Saptha Maha Saptha, Saptha Dweepa Vasundara, Sapth Arka Parna Madaya, Sapthamyam Snana Machareth”.
“seventh , seventh  , great seventh  , the earth has  seven islands ON this seventh day  I am  observing bath keeping   seven  Arka(erukku)  leaves  on the head.”

2. Stotra/Sloka(Translation by  P.R.Ramachander)

Sapthsapthi-priye devi
Sapthalogaiga deepike!
Sapth-janmaarjitham papam
Hara sapthami sathvaram       (1)

Oh  Goddess  who likes the seventh of sevenths  ,
Who is   the lustrous lamp among the seven worlds,
During this seventh linar day  please remove,
The sins that  I have earned in the seven births.(1)

Yanmayaathrakrutham papam
poorvam sapthasoojanmasoo!
thathsarvam  Soka mohou cha
maakare hanthu sapthami    (2)

All of those sins   committed   by  me ,
In the earlier seven births ,
As well    as   my sorrows   and passions,
May please be destroyed By Sapthami of Makara  Month(2)

Namaami sapthameem devim
Sarvapaapa-pranaasi'neem!
sapthaarkka - pathra - snaanena
Mama papam vyabohathu!     (3)

I salute    the Goddess  Sapthami ,
Who is capable  of destroying  all sins  ,
And by the bathing with seven  Erukku leaves,
Let   all  my sins   be   completely removed.(3)

After this  any time   during the day  read or hear  Adithya  Hrudaya , which is taught  by sage Agasthya   to Lord Rama  in Ramayana  , so that he has the ability to kill  Ravana

   Mahodhaya Punya  Kalam  is an extremely special  day to  satisfy the  Pithrus. It occurs , when thai  Amavasya   falls on a  Monday  with star  THiruonam .That day   also has vyathi padha  yogam( when Pithrus    are supposed  to be very hungry) . IN the SAmkshepa  Dharma Sasthra it has been told
Ardhodhaya mahodhaya punya kala niroopanam
Finding out of Ardhodhaya and mahodhaya punya kalas.

1.Samgrahe
If in the month of Pushya or Magha , the Vyathee patha ends in the first part of Amavasya , or middle period of Sravana star (thiruonam) or during sun rise or on Sunday , that period is known as Ardhodhaya punya kala If the first four occurs on a Monday , it is Mahodhaya punya kala (?)
If Amavasya occurs on a Monday , Sapthami thidhi occurs on a Sunday , Chathurthi occurs on Tuesday and Ashtami on Wednesday these days are equivalent to the solar eclipse
This is the second time this occurs in the last 150 years  .The previous  one occurred  on 8th February 2016.
Please  change   the Amavasya tharpana sanklpam on that day to

          Vilambanama samvathsare ,Utharayane , hemantha   rithou, makara   mase , Krishna  pakshe, adhya amavasyam  punya thidhou , Indu       vasara yukthayam, Sravana   nakshatra yukthayam, shubhayoga, shubhaKarana evam guna viseshena, visishtayam asyam amavasyam  punya thidhou, Vyathi patha   yogasya  , mahodhaya amavasya  punyakale, darsa sradham , thilatharpana roopena adhya karishye

(Amavasya up till 2.35 AM  next morning   (Prathama afterwards) and Sravana    Nakshtra up to  6.02 Am   next day  afterwards Dhanishta)

On that  day  if possible  visit  temples    where Pithru pooja   is done like Gaya  , Rameswaram , Varanasi , SEshampadi near  Kumbhakonam , Thilatharpana puri(sethalapathy)  near Koothanur , Gokarna, Sri Vanchiam  near  THiruvarur , Trimbakeswar , Thiruvengadu near Seerkazhy, Pushkar
